Rh Blood Type Antigen And Antibody
The rh blood group system is a human blood group system. There is no d antigen.
It contains proteins on the surface of red blood cells.
Rh blood type antigen and antibody. Antibodies abo blood group. Blood type is determined by which antigens present on red blood cells. Antigens and antibodies play a role in the immune system s defense mechanism.
In respect of blood and blood red blood cells is their surface antigenic complexes. Depending on availability all people are divided into resa positive antigen carriers and rh negative people who do not have the rh antigen. One of these is the rh factor or rh antigen.
Scientists use two types of antigens to classify blood types. They appear to be used for the transport of co 2 and or ammonia across the plasma membrane. The rh antigen poses a danger for the rh negative person who lacks the antigen if rh positive blood is given in transfusion.
Rh antigens also called rhesus antigens are transmembrane proteins expressed at the surface of erythrocytes. There are 4 main blood groups defined by the abo system. If the rh antigen is absent the blood is rh negative rh.
Blood group a has a antigens on the red blood cells with anti b antibodies in the plasma blood group b has b antigens with anti a antibodies in the plasma blood group o has no antigens but both anti a and anti b antibodies in the plasma. The abo blood group comprises anti a anti b antibodies in the serum. Like the a and b antigens the presence or absence of the rh antigen is inherited.
Antibodies recognize antigens and target them for degradation. A type a donor can give blood to a recipient with the same blood group because their antigens and antibodies are not the same antigen a and antibody b. Anti rh antibodies are not normally present in the plasma of rh persons.
But a type a donor cannot give blood to a recipient with type b because the donor blood has antibodies for b antigens present in the recipient blood and these antibodies would destroy the red. If the rh antigen is present on the red blood cells the blood is typed as rh positive rh. The rh blood group comprises 49 different antigens along with the antigen d on the surface of the red blood cells.
Adverse effects may not occur the first time rh incompatible blood is given but the immune system responds to the foreign rh antigen by producing anti rh antibodies. It is the second most important blood group system after the abo blood group system the rh blood group system consists of 49 defined blood group antigens among which the five antigens d c c e and e are the most important. The antigens are sometimes called isohemagglutinins.
Antigens are macromolecules usually proteins that can elicit an immune response and help the body determine self vs. This process is referred to as isohemagglutination.
